‘Why this deemed varsity status?’

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has suggested to the Centre that the Tandon committee be asked to look into the basic question whether there is any need for conferring deemed university status on an institution.

This suggestion came from a Bench consisting of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Mukundakam Sharma after Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam said the committee had been asked to ensure that standards of higher education and research were maintained by such institutions so as to justify their continuance as deemed universities.

When the Solicitor-General said the committee was expected to submit its report by the first week of September, Justice Bhandari asked: “Is the distinction between university and deemed university necessary? Do you think that such a status should be abolished? Why can’t the institution be under the control of the university?”

When Justice Sharma wanted to know whether the Tandon committee would go into the necessity of having deemed universities, the Solicitor-General said it would “look into all aspects and this aspect is also being looked into.”

The Bench was hearing a public interest petition filed by advocate Viplav Sharma in 2006 seeking regulation of deemed universities.
