“Protect water sources for a safer tomorrow”

Safe and healthy: Former MLA T.N. Sivasubramanian releasing the documentary “Neerinri Amayathu...” brought out by Makkal Vazhvurimai Iyakkam in Karur.

KARUR: Pollution of river systems and other sources of drinking water and irrigation should be prevented at any cost to safeguard the future of mankind and other living beings, farmers stressed at a meet here on Friday that discussed the ramifications of pollution, especially in water sources.

The Makkal Vazhvurimay Iyakkam had arranged the meeting in which various farmers’ activists and social activists participated.

The occasion was meant for the release of the documentary “Neerinri Amayathu…” and the speakers utilized the opportunity to drive home the point that all water sources should be protected from pollution and other ecological onslaught so that the future generations would be handed unpolluted sources.

President of the Iyakkam V. Ammaiyappan released the compact disc of the documentary, brought out by its secretary P. Gunasekaran. Former Karur MLA T.N. Sivasubramanian, state secretary, Tamilaga Vivasyigal Sangam, E. Varadarajan, Karur District Underground Water Protection Sangam president K. Ramasamy, Women’s Front general secretary Christina, Lower Bhavani Aycutdars’ Association president S. Nallasamy, secretary of Federation of Tamil Nadu Banana Growers’ Associations G. Ajeethan, working president of the Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association Mahadanapuram V. Rajaram, secretary Gandhi Pithan and president of Noyyal River Aycutdars Association A.P. Kandasamy released the copies of the compact disc.

Speaking on the documentary, the producer, Mr. Gunasekaran, said that the documentary aimed at creating awareness among the public on the full impact of pollution on river systems through the audio visual media, understand completely the ill effects of pollution on all beings with adequate proof.

Two-year effort

The documentary was the result of two-year effort that involved the cooperation of more than 35 environmental activists and enthusiasts, he added.

The ill effects of pollution on areas spread over more than 250 sq km have been recorded in the documentary.

The documentary also contains slides on various issues including law and other social implications.

People should come out strongly to prevent pollution of water sources and only then would they be saved, he added.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Nallasamy said that effluents from Erode district have polluted Kalingarayan Channel causing untold misery. Bhavani, Noyyal and Orathupalayam reservoirs have turned into pits of pollution and instead of protecting people they were destroying their livelihood, he added.

Mr. Kandasamy observed that the future of fertile fields had become a big question mark with the onslaught of pollution on agriculture lands.

“If we have to leave our succeeding generations in secure hands we have to prevent pollution of water sources and farmlands,” he underlined.

Mr. Varadarajan pointed out that though the governments had extended a lot of benefits to the farmers, the lot of the agricultural community had not improved over the years.

The farming community should rise as one against pollution that was hitting at their rock bottom, he said. “SUDAR” organisation’s Thennarasu and social activist Indra were among those who spoke on the occasion.
