Division of B.Com class leaves Ramjas students unhappy

Parul Sharma

NEW DELHI: Several second year students of B.Com (Honours) at Delhi University’s Ramjas College are unhappy and worried after their class was divided into two sections.

The students were recently informed that the B.Com (Hons) class would be split into two sections -- comprising over 50 students each -- due to lack of infrastructure.

While the students are fine with this arrangement, those who have been allotted section B are unhappy with the “inconvenient timetable”.

“We have been informed that section A will have classes from 8-40 a.m. to 1-15 p.m., while section B classes will be held from 10-30 a.m. till 5 p.m. Most of us have got enrolled in MBA or CA coaching classes held in the evenings. How will we be able to attend these classes if our college finishes by 5 p.m.?” asked one student.

Some section B students have also alleged discrimination claiming that all the experienced and senior faculty members at the Department have been allotted to section A. “Ever since the college has re-opened, we have teachers for only two subjects out of nine. Last academic session, we had no teacher for Accounts and Economics for most part of the year. The ad hoc teachers that came later were not good. They asked us to submit assignments without teaching much,” claimed another student.

Meanwhile, Principal Rajendra Prasad said he would convene a meeting of the Department and the students next week to resolve the issue. He also assured that students would be given an option of choosing their section. “We are going to write a letter to Delhi University seeking permission to advertise for teaching posts in the college. We have also asked the senior faculty members to divide their time between the two sections,” Dr. Prasad maintained.
