Thangal a protector of secularism: VS

THIRUVANANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has described Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal as a leader whose contributions to the cause of secularism remain ever relevant. In a condolence message released here immediately after the demise of the Indian Union Muslim League leader late on Saturday evening, Mr. Achuthanandan said Thangal had been a major presence in the State’s politics. His death was most unexpected and a major loss for the State and the nation, the Chief Minister said.

Non-controversial

Minister for Local Self-government Paloli Mohammed Kutty said Mr. Thangal was a leader who never got embroiled in controversies and who would be remembered for the important role in preserving the State’s secular tradition. Mr. Thangal was a symbol of tolerance and peace, the Minister said in his message.

In his message, CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said Mr. Thangal was a gentleman-politician, who was loved and respected by the masses cutting across political affiliations.

By playing a major role in keeping the secular fabric of the State intact, Mr. Thangal had made a major contribution to the State’s political history, Mr. Vijayan noted.

Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan said Mr. Thangal’s death was a major loss for secular Kerala.

Chandy pays tribute

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said that Mr. Thangal was the quintessential torchbearer of democratic and secular forces in the country.

In his condolence message, Mr. Chandy said it was Mr. Thangal’s strong and committed stand that preserved peace and amity in Kerala during the difficult days following the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

Mr. Thangal also tirelessly worked for communal peace and amity and his services for the growth of the Muslim community would be always remembered.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala, in his condolence message, said Kerala had lost a personality who had always upheld secular values. Mr. Thangal’s contribution for the uplift of not only the Muslim community but also the backward communities would always be cherished, he said. Kerala Congress (B) chairman R Balakrishna Pillai said Mr. Thangal was the personification of secularism and democracy.

Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader T.M. Jacob said Mr. Thangal was a leader revered beyond the realms of politics.
