Coimbatore: Kongu Nadu Munnetra Kazhagam General Secretary and candidate for by-election to Thondamuthur Assembly constituency E.R. Easwaran has pointed out that the election became necessary only because of the resignation of the legislator M. Kannappan. Mr. Kannappan had resigned his post as a Member of the Legislative Assembly after quitting the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK). CampaignMr. Easwaran was speaking at an election meeting in Thondamuthur after starting his campaign at Noyyal. Mr. Kannappan tendered his resignation as he had to resign from his party because of personal reasons, which, in turn, had resulted in expenditure for the Government. An elected representative, who came seeking votes during elections, did not consult the people before resigning. He exhorted the electorate to question him for his resignation, if he came to campaign for the nominee of the alliance that he now belonged to. He also accused the ruling party of making a ‘mockery of democracy’ and alleged misuse of money in the Thirumangalam by-poll. Such political combines should be boycotted by the people, he said. Mr. Easwaran added that prior to the Lok Sabha elections, the Government had said that the demand for toddy tapping would be considered, however, after the elections the same Government unleashed police excesses on farmers and toddy tappers. He also accused the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijaykant of failing to make use of the floor of the Assembly to speak for the people. Mr. Easwaran also flayed the Communist parties for being the reason for the closure of many industrial units in Coimbatore.
