Tension at Karwar over ‘torture’ of BJP leader

Correspondent

Karwar: Tension prevailed at the District Hospital premises here on Sunday when the local BJP leaders, who were agitated by the alleged torture of their party’s former Yuva Morcha president Ganapati Tikkam in police custody, created a ruckus there.

Mr. Tikkam, who had gone to the Chittakula police station on Thursday night to handover some papers related to bail for an accused in Hanakon violence, was arrested for “inciting” trouble at Hanakon, according to sources. BJP leaders, including Karwar unit president Jagadish Birkodikar and general secretary Nagaraj Joshi, went to the hospital to meet Mr. Tikkam. When they met him they came to know that he was discharged from the hospital by the duty doctor under “pressure” from the police. Mr. Tikkam, who went on a fast in protest against his discharge from the hospital, alleged that the police had asked the duty doctor to issue a medial certificate that he had sustained injuries after falling on a hard surface and not because of the “torture” in custody.

The enraged BJP leaders took the police and doctors in the hospital to task alleging that there was a conspiracy to hush up the “torture” case.

The duty doctor and the chief medical officer said that they discharged Mr. Tikkam because he was on a fast.

Addressing presspersons, Mr. Tikkam alleged that he was handcuffed in the police station and three sub-inspectors beat him up, causing injuries.
