Shrines to become heritage sites

Tirupur: It looks as if it is boom time ahead for temple tourism in the district as the district administration plans to elevate the historic Amanalingeswarar Temple situated atop Thirumoorthy Hills along with a few other shrines into heritage sites.

Collector C. Samayamoorthy told The Hindu that a blue print of the project would be readied soon by tying up with Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and sending the proposal to the government for approval.

As part of the project, basic amenities in and around Thirumoorthy Hills will be improved to attract more tourists by establishing adequate resting sheds adjacent to the Amanalingeswarar Temple. Drinking water as well as lighting facilities in the area will be given attention.

It has also been planned to reintroduce boating in Thirumoorthy Dam.

Another temple planned to be elevated as a heritage site is the ninth century-built Thirumurganatha Swamy Temple situated at Thirumuruganpoondi on the outskirts of Tirupur city.

“A ‘maha mandapam’ and an ‘aradhana mandapam’ will be constructed and greenery established in the area, P.R. Ashok, Regional Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department, said.

Similarly, Avinashi Lingeswarar Temple at Avinashi will be made into a heritage site after carrying out infrastructure development works which include construction of waiting hall, sanitary complex and parking space.
