BHUBANESWAR: International chess player Padmini Rout was nominated for the prestigious 16th Ekalabya Award for the year 2008. The Ekalabya Award Committee, comprising jury members drawn from different walks of life, were unanimous in deciding Padmini among the eleven short-listed candidates for the award here on Sunday. Ekalabya Award was instituted by Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust ( IMPCT) the charitable wing of IMFA Group in 1993. The award is given every year in recognition of outstanding performance in sports. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000 and a citation. “Padmini has a brilliant international track record for the past two years winning second position in Asian Junior Girls Chess Championship in December 2007 and securing third position in under 14 girls category of Commonwealth Chess championship same year,” a statement said here. Excel in many eventsAccording to the trust, she excelled in many national events, including international rating women B open chess Championship in May 2006 where she got third position and National Women B Chess Championship in May 2007 in where she got second position.
