Dam getting inflows only because of power generation made by Srisailam project

Water level in the dam at 504 feet, as against its full reservoir level of 590 feet

HYDERABAD: The government has decided to release water to Nagarjunasagar Right and Left Canals for the kharif season tentatively on August 15 or 16 to serve existing ayacut of about 30 lakh acres.

The Committee on Integrated Operation of Krishna River System Projects, headed by M.K. Rahaman, Engineer-in-Chief, Irrigation (Administration), held discussions with the Chief Engineers of all Krishna-based projects here on Saturday to decide the schedule of release of water under different projects across the river.

But for the poor inflows received in Nagarjunasagar, the Committee would have finalised a date in the first week of August to release water to Nagarjunasagar ayacut spread over six districts – Nalgonda, Khammam, Guntur, Prakasam, Krishna and West Godavari.

Mr. Rahaman told The Hindu later that the committee had decided to wait till mid-August as by then, the storage in Nagarjunasagar dam was expected to improve. Now the dam was getting inflows only because of power generation made by Srisailam. The water level on Saturday in the dam stood at 504 feet, as against its full reservoir level of 590 feet.
