SPEED QUEENS! A participant showing the victory sign as she waits for the commencement of the ‘Women on Wheels - 2009’ contest in Vijayawada on Sunday. VIJAYAWADA: The mood was in top gear this weekend when more than 70 women gathered for a two-wheeler rally at Siddhartha college campus on Sunday. The environs were filled with excitement, confidence and determination for an adventurous ride. As the clock struck 2.30 p.m., thundering noise rent the campus. It was the rumble and roar of tens of two-wheelers. And the participants reached top gear within a fraction of second and literally took off like “dragon flies”. Police vehicles (Rakshak and Blue Colts), which were supposed to escort the rally, hardly matched the swiftness of the participants. Media personnel made vain attempts to click few frames of the participants who whizzed past them to reach target. The speed, of course, resulted in injury of six participants. Interestingly, most of the participants did not wear helmet, but the organisers allowed them to participate though they maintained that helmet was mandatory. A few participants returned covering a distance of about 16 km in shortest possible time. The participants say it was something new for them and gave them a feeling that women were equal to their male counterparts in every respect, including racing. This was proof that we can handle pressure and difficult situations and were not confined to only soft work, they say. Vijayasree Gupta, organiser, said that the participants would have to prove their mettle both in speed and brain as they would have to answer a question paper immediately after finishing the ride. The event, Women on wheels-2009, was organised by Inner Wheel club of Vijayawada, Lions Vidya Gold and others jointly. The other competitions included cooking, sravana Lakshmi/Dasara Ammavari Alamkaram, Srimathi Snehita-2009, and talented twins.
