High-resolution cameras to be installed at vital locations in Mysore MYSORE: Surveillance will be stepped up in Mysore city during the Dasara this year owing to general threat perception. Every movement on important roads and around landmarks in the city will be closely watched by the police in real time from a hi-tech control room as they are planning to install high-speed and high-resolution surveillance cameras at vital locations. The Police Department, with funds it received from the Rs. 100-crore special grant to Mysore, will procure 42 hi-tech cameras as part of its plan to tighten security in the city which is frequented by domestic and international tourists round the year. “I have told the officers to get the cameras installed at all identified locations as and when they are delivered to us. Our plan is to have them installed before the Dasara,” Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal said. During a chat with The Hindu, Mr. Agarwal said he went around the city to identify the places where the cameras had to be installed. “The spots were finalised after a detailed study,” he added. Of the 42 cameras, 29 will be used for surveillance and 13 for identifying traffic rule violations. “We have identified some spots where the cameras will be used for identifying traffic rule violations during daytime and for surveillance during night,” he said. A temporary control room to keep tabs on movement of people and vehicles will be established in the office of the Commissioner of Police before Dasara, according to Mr. Agarwal. A permanent control room will be set up after the festivities. The police will review security at the Mysore palace to put in place a foolproof system. Owing to the general threat perception, additional armed police personnel have been deployed at the city’s prime monument. All visitors to the palace are being frisked and their bags checked. Night vigil on the palace premises has been intensified and patrolling outside the palace stepped up. Mr. Agarwal said, “I will shortly review the security at the palace,” he added.
