Thiruvananthapuram: The Excise Department has launched a pre-Onam enforcement drive to crack down on the sale of illicit liquor. Deputy Commissioner, Excise, Thiruvananthapuram, K.N. Mohanlal, said that in the past few months , the Kerala State Beverages Corporation had registered a Rs.43 crore increase in sales. This indicated that the department’s ongoing drive was yielding results. The department constantly checked toddy shops to curb the sale of illicit spirit disguised as toddy. The department registered 1,675 cases in the past six months. More than 1,363 people were arrested in cases relating to sale of illicit liquor. More than 55,000 litres of illicit spirit and 45 kg of marijuana were seized.
