Emphatic win for SBT

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Defending champion State Bank of Travancore started its campaign with an emphatic 5-0 win over St. Mary’s FC in the Thiruvananthapuram district super division football league at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium here on Monday.

SBT opened scoring through Abdul Hakkim in the 20th minute. St. Mary’s defence which had put up a brave show eventually caved in against its superior rival and Asif Saheer increased the lead in the 30th minute with a volley from top of the box. The striker scored his second goal five minutes later as SBT led 3-0 at half-time.

The bankmen dominated the second half but missed plenty of chances and even hit the post once. Johnson slotted in a rebound to score the fourth goal in the 75th minute and Martin Johnson completed the tally in the 78th minute.

Earlier, Kelton scored a solitary goal win over Coastal Club. Striker Viu scored the all-important goal in the 65th minute.

Monu on song

Monu George scored 20 points as Matha Nagar Public School (Kadavanthra) defeated Rajagiri HSS ‘B’ (Kalamassery) 57-25 in a Pool ‘B’ boys match of the Ernakulam District inter-school basketball championship which began at the Fort Kochi YMCA on Monday.

The results: Boys: Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir (Elamakara) 54 (Rahul 12, Anand 12) bt Sacred Heart Public School ‘B’ (Thevara) 28; Mathanagar PS (Ernakulam) 57 (Monu George 20, Arjun 18) bt Rajagiri HSS ‘B’ (Kalamassery) 25 (Alex Mathai 10); Govt. HSS, Calvatty (Fort Kochi) 48 bt Don Bosco ‘B’ (Vaduthala) 24.

KSSC elections

A special general meeting of the Kerala State Sports Council (KSSC) will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on August 13 to elect the new KSSC vice-president and five members to its Standing Committee.

The elections, to be held for the first time since the State Assembly adopted the Kerala Sports Act 2000, will enable the elected officials to hold office for five years.

The post of the KSSC president is to be filled directly by the Government by nominating one to the post from among the elected members to the KSSC.

The current KSSC president, T.P.Dasan, who was named to the post three years ago, is certain to be retained as the new president. Dasan is the representative of the Kozhikode District Sports Council to the KSSC.

Sree Shankar to lead

Sree Shankar will lead Thrissur in the Central Zone under-19 inter-district cricket championship which begins in Kochi on August 8.

The team: Sree Shankar (capt.), Sidharth Shankar (vice capt. & wk), P.D. Danish Paul, K.A. Rameez, K.N. Nithin, Nidhin Simon, Akhil K. Das, P.M. Mahesh, T.V. Krishnakumar, Akhilharan, P.B. Nithin, K. Ranjith, Madhumohan, M. Arun, Sandeep Warrier and Syamsunder.
