KARUR: Thousands of people, transcending barriers of age and calling, gathered along the banks of River Cauvery in various places in Karur district to celebrate ‘Adi Perukku’ festival on Monday. The festival is an important milestone for the newly married and hundreds of young couples thronged the banks of Cauvery at Thavuttupalayam, Vangal, Nerur, Thirumukkoodalur, Mayanur, Lalapet and Kulithalai to mark the thanksgiving to the river for the bounty she has bestowed on them. Similarly, agricultural families offered their respectful thanks to the river on the occasion in various bathing ghats. Youths attired in their colourful best were seen in many places along the banks of the river in the district as mirth and merriment marked the day that bore all signs of a holiday mood. Special pujas were conducted in several temples on the occasion. People swarmed the Sellandiamman Temple at Mayanur and the Mahalakshmiamman Temple at Mettumahadanapuram on the Adi Perukku day. At the Mettumahadanapuram temple all is set for the annual ritual of breaking the coconut on the head of devotees as a mark of fulfillment of vow and the ritual is slated for Tuesday. The traffic on the road was less, as the sand quarries on the river remained closed for the second consecutive day on Monday. Buses were crowded in the peak hours and as dusk settled down over the town the river came alive with sparkling lights in many bathing ghats as people set afloat ritual articles such as “Kaadholai” and “Karugamani.” Police had made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident in the ghats while the Fire and Rescue Services personnel were at hand in important locations to help whenever required.
