MYSORE: The National Translation Mission (NTM), Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), has organised a two-day national conference on “Approaches to translation: Indian and SouthAsian Perspective, reading of Parasangada Gendethimma” from August 4 on the CIIL premises. Rajendra Chenni of Kuvempu University will deliver the keynote address. The highlight of the conference will be screening of the film “Parasangada Gendethimma” directed by Maruthi Shivaram. Mr. Shivaram, noted film-maker M.S. Sathyu, academic Govinda Rao, Vanamala Vishwanath, V.B. Tharakeshwar, D.H. Nikhila, noted critic G.K. Nayak and K.S. Bhagavan will take part in the conference. The NTM has been organising academic events centred round the translated works of some of the most celebrated novels in the history of Indian literature to generate a discourse on the original and the translated work. These translated novels are a part of the Macmillan project. “Parasangada Gendethimma” is a well-known Kannada novel by Krishna Alanahalli. The novel reveals two major concerns: the qualities generated by the conflict between tradition and modernity and the role of sexuality in human life. The novel also has an unmistakable and well-documented historical context with regard to the post-Independence era, caste struggles, village economy and so on.
