Council mourns Shihab Thangal

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The City Corporation Council has mourned the death of Indian Union Muslim League State president Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal. A resolution moved by Mayor C. Jayan Babu at the council meeting on Monday said Thangal had been a major presence in Kerala politics for almost three decades and was a spiritual leader.

Thangal, the Mayor said, was known for his secular credentials and had always remained away from the portals of power. He had found time to listen to the problems of the common man and to solve them. The resolution noted that Thangal had effectively intervened when there were attempts to disturb communal harmony in the State. He had made it clear that there was no compromise when it came to tackling religious fundamentalism. His death was a big loss to Kerala. The council observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to Thangal. It then adjourned for the day without transacting any business.
