Central team tours rain-hit districts

Kerala Bureau

Team says it has a fair picture of

the damage

State demands to be presented

before Centre

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A group of top Central government officials on Monday visited some of the areas worst affected by last month’s torrential rain in the State to assess the dimension of the damage.

The group, led by Home Affairs Joint Secretary Sada Kant, turned into three teams visiting the rain-hit areas of Kozhikode, Thrissur and Malappuram districts, seeing for itself the wreckage left behind by the landslips and floods.

The officials listened to presentations by the District Collectors and interacted with the affected people.

They would cover Wayanad and Palakkad districts and other affected areas on Tuesday.

Mr. Sada Kant said in Kozhikode that the team now had a fair picture of the monsoon damage and would be presenting to the Union government its report immediately on return to New Delhi.

The team would hold discussions with Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and other Ministers on Wednesday before leaving for New Delhi.

He said the team had noted the State government’s representation that the Central norms for assistance in the event of natural calamities often neglected the ground realities in Kerala.

Change of norms

Responding to questions from the media, he said that the State’s demand for changing the norms to give due consideration to the situation in Kerala would be presented before the Union government.

He promised that the team’s report would be favourable to the affected people.

The other members of the team are K. Manoharan (Agriculture Ministry), R.M. Deshpande (Water Supply), A.K. Raina (Finance), Harish Chandra (Planning), Sanjiv Kumar (Roads and Transport) and K.S. Chacko (Water Resources).
