NEW DELHI: Two final year students of Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College were arrested on Monday after they allegedly ragged a fresher in the college hostel on Sunday evening. Earlier in the day, they were expelled from the college.
The students — Hani Mohammad (B.Sc. Physical Science) and Akshay Choudhary (B.Sc. Computer Science) — have been expelled from the college as well as the hostel after the authorities received a complaint from a first year student about the duo ragging him in a hostel room last evening. The decision was taken at the college Proctorial Board meeting on Monday .
A case was registered at the Maurice Nagar police station after the college lodged a First Information Report in the evening and the accused were arrested under Sections 294 (Obscene acts and songs), 323 (Voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (Wrongful confinement) and 355 (Assault with intent to dishonour a person) of the Indian Penal Code.Evasive response
A third person who asked the victim, a B.Sc. Physical Science student, to go to the hostel room no. 64 where he was allegedly ragged, is yet to be traced and the authorities remained evasive on the issue.
“I received a complaint from the victim that the two third year students asked him to squat in a ‘murga position.’ They also used some harsh words against him. The complaint of the victim was enough to take suo motu notice. It is the responsibility of the institution to take action,” said hostel warden Kumar Amarendra Singh.
“The third person has still not been traced. It is not clear who he was. He could be a student or an outsider. The two students have been expelled till proved otherwise by a court,” he added.
Meanwhile, some senior students of the college protested against the expulsion of the two students.
