BANGALORE: The Indian Davis Cupper, Rohan Bopanna, who was sidelined with a knee injury, has recovered and started his on-court work outs with coach Prahalad Srinath at the Nike Bhupathi Tennis Village here. Bopanna told The Hindu, “I am now 80 per cent fit and hope to recover fully by September and get to play the Davis Cup World group tie against South Africa as well as the US Open.” Bopanna suffered a ligament tear, while playing a Challenger at Nottingham, in June. He said: “I am able to serve at my normal speed and my lateral movements have improved now.” He said that his recovery has been steady and his Chennai based physio, S. Basu, was satisfied with his progress. “Hopefully, I wish to play a few Challengers in Europe to gain enough match practice before the Davis Cup tie,” he added. Looking at the Davis Cup prospects, Bopanna said: “Playing South Africa in Johannesburg should be tough, it is a high altitude venue and I understand that we get to play on indoor hard court. “But this is the best draw we could have hoped. After Australia forfeited the match against us, we are seeded to play in our group and luckily it is not the other way round where we could have run into a highly seeded team. I do fancy our chances.” Sanjay triumphsSanjay Sindhia won the open category in the C.V. Raman Chess Club’s monthly tournament that concluded at the State Youth Centre here on Sunday. Other champions: U-14: Pavan Shiralag; U-12: N. Kailash; U-10: Ameya Patil; U-8: N. Ashwin. Level I courseA four-day Level I course for umpires will be held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, from Tuesday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) umpire-educators — B.A. Jamula and T.K. Handu — will conduct the seminar for 30 emerging umpires of Karnataka.
