IM D.P. Singh. Chennai: International Master Diwakar Prasad Singh of Southern Railway, Chennai won the ninth Adyar Times FIDE-rated Open chess tournament for the second time in four years at the Bapalal Bhavan in Tiruvanmiyur, Chennai on Monday. “This was my best win,” said D.P. Singh, who had won it in 2006 while in a much stronger field. “I have now won 10 FIDE-rated tournaments,” said Singh. Singh, 33,started as the fourth seed, won eight games and drew two including the final round against Tamil Nadu junior champion Muthu Alagappan to clinch the title by a clear half-point margin with nine points from 10 games. Second seed Navin Kanna finished second with 8.5 points but never got to play the champion. He arrived three minutes late for the second round and was given a zero as the tournament followed FIDE’s new rule since July 1, 2009 which expects all players to be at their tables when the arbiter announces ‘start your games’. Lakshmi Narayanan of Kodaikanal finished third with eight points having the better tie-break score in the eight-point bracket. IM Manuel Aaron, Government Observer for Chess, gave away the prizes. Final placings: 1. D.P. Singh 9/10; 2 T.U. Navin Kanna 8.5; 3-6. M.V. Lakshmi Narayanan, P. Lokesh, S. Ganesh Babu, M. Muthu Alagappan 8 each; 7-10. M. Vinoth Kumar, Tejas Ravichandran, V.R. Varman, E. Sharath 7.5 each. Final round results: D.P. Singh drew with Muthu Alagappan, Navin Kanna bt Ramanathan Bhuvanesh, Ganesh Babu bt Srinivasa Rao.
