Inspection of vehicles stepped up

Udhagamandalam: District Collector Anandrao V.Patil has ordered a crackdown on vehicles which are plying without paying taxes and those polluting the atmosphere.

He has also instructed the transport authorities to ensure that the Nilgiris became an accident-free district.

In a press note issued here on Tuesday the Regional Transport Officer D.Venkataraman said that inspection of vehicles has been stepped up. During checks carried out in various parts of the district including Kotagiri, Coonoor, Kotagiri and Udhagamandalam, tax dues to the tune of Rs. 1.67 lakh had been collected.

A total of Rs. 7,000 had been collected as fine from owners of 15 vehicles which were found to be emitting excess smoke.

Pointing out that appropriate action had been taken against a number of vehicles which did not have the necessary certificates, he said that the licenses of 19 drivers involved in fatal accidents during the period April to June had been suspended for six months.

Stating that accidents cannot be averted without the cooperation of motorists and pedestrians, he said that all should obey traffic rules.

Rash driving should be avoided at all costs. Riders of two wheelers should wear helmets.

Stringent action will be taken against those driving without licenses and vehicles which do not have fitness certificates will be seized.
