CHENNAI: A gang that robbed employees of a poultry farm of Rs.6.17 lakh here late on Sunday night was arrested early on Monday. According to police, Govindaraj, manager of the farm, was proceeding to Krishnagiri in a van along with two others when an autorickshaw collided with the vehicle on the Ramapuram-Poonamallee Road around 10.40 p.m. As the van driver was arguing with those in the autorickshaw, four others came on two motorcycles and intervened. Accusing the van driver Murugan of negligence, they started attacking him and Govindaraj with clubs and liquor bottles. In the melee that followed, the suspects snatched the cash bag containing Rs.6.17 lakh and escaped. On information, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran alerted the night patrol teams to launch a combing operation. Under the supervision of Joint Commissioner of Police (Central) V. A. Ravikumar and Deputy Commissioner of Police (T. Nagar) G. Sampath Kumar, the teams apprehended the suspects. Preliminary enquiries revealed that Shakeel (24) of Old Washermenpet had information that Govindaraj would go to Krishnagiri every Sunday with money collected from poultry shops. He conspired to commit the robbery along with his associates Sottu alias Jahir (21), Thabres (20), Mohammed Shabir (20), Mani alias Manikandan (19), Mohammed Rafi (19), Ashrat Ali (20), Moulana (21) and Javed Sharif (20) of Washermenpet. “Within hours we managed to arrest the gang. All nine gangsters have been arrested”, Mr. Rajendran said. While some of them came in the autorickshaw and forcibly intercepted the van, others joined later. The cash robbed and vehicles used to commit the offence have been recovered,” Mr. Rajendran added.
