Kaumudi Teacher dead

KANNUR: Kaumudi Teacher, an ardent Gandhian, died here on Tuesday. She was 92.

Kaumudi Teacher died at her brother’s residence at Kadachira here on Tuesday evening. She had been ailing for some time due to age-related health problems.

Renunciation of her gold ornaments to Mahatma Gandhi for the cause of freedom struggle had elevated her to an inspirational figure in the freedom movement.

Born in 1917, she was attracted to the freedom movement. After matriculation, she had studied Hindi and got appointed as a teacher at the Government Girls High School here. She had retired from teaching service in 1972. A disciple of Vinobha Bhave, she had also been associated with the Bhoodhan Movement. Her voluntary act of renunciation inspired the young generation during the freedom movement.Gandhiji had been on a visit to Vadakara on January 14, 1934, in connection with the fund raising for the Harijan Sahaya Samithi.

Attending the function, she handed over her gold ornaments when Gandhiji appealed to the people to donate whatever they had.
