dated August 7, 1959: U.N. observers for Laos

Britain will make a “constructive suggestion” on the position in Laos in the near future, the British Foreign Office spokesman told a press conference in London on August 6. The spokesman said that he was in agreement with the suggestion made by the London Times that the United Nations should send observers to Laos where fighting between Government troops and rebels is taking place in the northern provinces. He said: “I must remind you that Laos is a sovereign State and a member of the United Nations.”
