dated August 7, 1959: River water dispute

Representatives of India, Pakistan and the World Bank on August 6 opened talks in London on a proposed treaty concerning the waters of the Indus river system over which India and Pakistan have been in dispute for about 12 years. They met in the Commonwealth Relations Office which has provided accommodation for the sessions but is not participating in the talks. A statement issued on August 5 after a brief meeting said the discussions would be directed towards an agreement for an international water treaty.
