dated August 7, 1959: U.S. space programme

A 63-foot Redstone missile, similar to that planned to carry the first American man into space, was test-fired in Cape Canaveral (Florida) on August 4, apparently successfully. The Redstone — successfully fired in 34 out of 37 tests and now on service with NATO forces — was recalled last November for modifications in preparation for the man-in-space programme.
