India loses opener

KOCHI: India lost its opener to host China 49-121 in the FIBA Asian men’s basketball championship which began in Tianjin on Thursday.

China led 36-11 in the first quarter and kept the tempo throughout. Hareesh Koroth, (14 pts) led the scoring for India

Qatar defeated Kazakhstan 77-62 in another Group ‘C’ match.

India plays Qatar on Friday and finishes its first phase engagements with a game against Kazakhstan on Saturday.

Three teams from each of the four groups in the preliminary group progress to the second phase.

The scores (Group ‘C’ only): China 121 (Yi Jianlian 16, Wei Su 16, Xuefeng Hu 16) bt India 49 (Hareesh Koroth 14, Talwinderjit Singh 11, Dinesh Coimbatore Venugopal 10); Qatar bt Kazakhstan 77-62.
