Government to give land to BPL households
K. Balchand
NEW DELHI: The Centre on Thursday decided to provide homestead land sites to rural below the poverty line (BPL) households.
Clearing the proposal, the Union Cabinet set a deadline of providing the sites by 2012 at the latest, with a directive to State governments to formulate a policy and action plan to achieve the target.
The Centre hopes the scheme will fulfill the need of the BPL households for shelter, and also to enable them to avail the benefit of schemes meant for the construction of houses.
Homestead land will be provided only to those BPL households that neither have land nor a house site, and the beneficiary would be chosen only from the permanent waitlist prepared under the Indira Awas Yojana.
