WADA refuses to comment on Indian players’ stand

Mumbai: The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has refrained from taking any position to a specific query on the anxiety and concerns expressed by India’s International Registered Testing Pool (IRTP) players and the Board of Control for Cricket in India on the out-of-competition tests and the ‘whereabouts’ clause in the 2009 ICC anti-doping code.

An official spokesman of WADA said the ICC management of its code, that is consistent with the WADA Code, was a work in progress.

Replying to a query, the spokesman stated: “WADA cannot comment on details of the Indian cricket ‘whereabouts’ matter at this stage given that the enforcement of the World Anti-Doping Code by the ICC in its sport is a work in progress.”

The BCCI decided last Sunday to back the 11 players on the IRTP who had refused to adhere to the ‘whereabouts’ requirements, arguing that the rules were unreasonable.

The ICC has stated that it was aware of the issues and was confident that the matter could be resolved. The ICC Board is expected to take up the topic at its next meeting. — Special Correspondent
