THANJAVUR: Tamil University will translate Tholkappiam into Hindi soon, said Vice-Chancellor M.Rajendran here on Friday.

Presiding over a special lecture here on ‘Tamil in Hindi,’ delivered by M. Seshan, retired Hindi professor of Vaishnava College (Chennai), Mr. Rajendran said that Mr. Seshan would translate the ancient grammatical work.

Mr. Rajendran said that the Tamil development department had completed the translation of classical Sangam literature into Hindi.

Translation of Silapathikaram into Hindi had also been completed.

Tamil University would take steps to release these works.

The university would organise a seminar on Sangam literature in Hindi with Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi in January-February next year.

Mr.Rajendran said that Tamil literature had been translated into English and people around the world had tasted them.

But, unfortunately, people in north India could not appreciate the richness of Tamil literature because efforts had not been made to reach Tamil literature to them through translations, he said.

“Now the time has come to do so. This will help them appreciate our language. The Hindi Prachara Sabha has come forward to release Hindi books about Tamil literature written by scholars like Mr. Seshan.”

“The Sabha has come forward to bring out books in Hindi about Tamil literature. We have come forward to translate Tamil liteary works into Hindi. There is a change of mind on both sides,” Rajendran said.

Mr.Seshan said that the Sabha should introduce literature in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada to Hindi people.

He called for introduction of a department of comparative literature in Tamil University.

“Translation and comparative literary studies are very important to know about the richness of languages,” he said.

Comparative studies helped him to know about the richness and ancientness of Tamil and Sanskrit. Bhakthi literature moved from Tamil to Sanskrit, Prahiruth and Hindi, etc.

S.Radhakrishnan, Head of the Department of Translation, which organised the special lecture, welcomed the gathering.
