Nerve centre of operations for coastal defence To receive real-time surveillance feed Kochi: The Southern Naval Command here has set up a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) for coastal defence at the Naval Base. The centre was inaugurated by Admiral Sureesh Mehta, Chief of the Naval Staff, during his recent visit. The JOC, set up in accordance with instructions from the Central government, is expected to be the nerve centre of all operations pertaining to Kerala’s coastal defence. Besides the Navy and the Coast Guard, the State Police, Port Trusts, Fisheries Department, Customs Department, Light House Authorities and intelligence agencies have a stake in costal security and are, therefore, part of the centre. The JOC will coordinate activities of all these agencies during costal security operations to attain synergy and uniformity of purpose. The JOC has a central operation-cum-briefing room from where communication with all agencies is possible. Further, there is individual work centre for each agency. The JOC receives real-time feed from surveillance assets of the Navy and the Coast Guard and the Vessel Traffic Management System of the Cochin Port. It has round-the-clock monitoring by Navy and Coast Guard personnel.
