Surrenders passport
R. Rajaram
S.A. Raja
TIRUCHI: S.A. Raja of Tirunelveli, who was stopped from flying out of the country from the Tiruchi airport on Saturday, reportedly surrendered his passport to police.
Convicted and sentenced to undergo double life imprisonment by the Madras High Court Bench a few days ago for the murder of former Minister Aladi Aruna, Raja is staying in a guest house of a dental college run by him on the outskirts of the city. His wife and son met him on Saturday.
He was detained by Immigration officials when he arrived at the airport to board a Sri Lankan Airlines flight to Colombo. The Immigration officials were reportedly alerted by Tiruchi Superintendent of Police A. Kaliyamurthy, following a tip-off.
Though Raja was kept under surveillance, police maintain that until an arrest warrant was issued, he could not be arrested.
Police were awaiting the issue of arrest warrant against him by the Tirunelveli Sessions Court based on the High Court Bench verdict. A police team from Tirunelveli was expected to arrive in Tiruchi.
