THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has called for strengthening cooperation between the civil administration and the defence forces to address the threat posed by terrorists to national security. He was inaugurating a joint civil-military training programme on national security organised by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and the Institute of Management in Government (IMG) here on Monday. Mr. Achuthanandan described the civil administration and the defence forces as two solid pillars of the social framework. Their close functioning was imperative to tackle the terrorist threat looming large over the nation. They should understand their roles and should function in a complementary manner to overcome the challenges to national security, he said. The session, he said, should take a serious view of issues such as insurgency, terrorism, communalism and political extremism, among other things. Top priorityThe State government had attached top priority to in-service training. The IMG had conducted 1,200 training programmes covering 50,000 persons. More programmes would be conducted, he said. Chief Secretary Neela Gangadharan, in her presidential address, said greater coordination between the civil administration and the defence forces was essential to meet the increasing challenges.
