KRISHNAGIRI: People should shun political parties which do not have faith in democracy, said Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi here on Tuesday. Ms. Kanimozhi was addressing a series of street campaigns in support of DMK candidate K.R.K. Narasimhan in Bargur Assembly constituency. She started her campaign in Orappam village on the Bangalore-Chennai National Highway. She said Opposition parties were boycotting the by-elections as they did not have the courage to face the people. Opposition parties charged the DMK government with taking loans indiscriminately. The government was obtaining loans only for the development of the State, she added. She campaigned in Elathagiri, Varattanapalli, Chinnamattarapalli, Kuruvinayanappalli, Basavannankoil, Sindhagampalli, Karakuppam, Emakkalnatham, Oppathawadi, Sigaralapalli, Sakilnatham, Batlapalli road junction and Ginjampatti villages and ended her campaign at Aampalli. On Wednesday, she will campaign in Madaraalli, Mottur villages and Mathur town, the party sources here said. ‘Vijayakant has no right’On Monday, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu addressed meetings in Pochampalli and Bargur in support of Mr. K.R.K. Narasimhan. Mr. Thangkabalu said that Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam founder Vijayakant had no right to criticise the welfare programmes implemented in the State under the guidance of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. He asked the voters to teach the political parties headed by actors a lesson in the by-elections. He said the victory of the Congress-DMK alliance in the parliamentary elections was an approval by the people for the welfare measures launched by the Union and State governments. “A ban imposed on recruitment by the then AIADMK Government was lifted by the DMK Government as soon as it came to power. As a result, about 6.5 lakh people got employment opportunities. In addition to this, as per the announcement of Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, one crore jobs were created during the Congress government’s previous regime,” he added. ‘Give us a chance’While the ruling party is using money and muscle power to win by-elections, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam wants a chance to serve the people, its founder Vijayakant said here on Tuesday. Vijayakant started his campaign in the Bargur constituency in support of his party candidate V. Chandran, who is contesting as an independent. “If Chandran wins the elections, the party will make efforts to supply drinking water through tanker lorries within 10 days,” Vijayakant said and added that he had been supplying drinking water to the people of his Viruthachalam constituency on his own expense. The DMDK set up computer centres in all the districts to serve the poor people. More centres would be opened to give computer education to the poor students, he said.
