Commercial beekeeping in Tirupur block soon
Staff Reporter
Tirupur: Commercial apiculture and floriculture are set to take off in Tirupur block this fiscal, as the Department of Horticulture plans to extend subsidy assistance to the tune of Rs. 2.72 lakh for such activities under National Horticulture Mission (NHM). P Santhanakirshnan, Assistant Director of Horticulture, told The Hindu that promotion of apiculture or beekeeping was aimed at improving cross pollination among various horticulture crops with the help of the bees and thereby increase the production as well as yield of fruits and vegetables.
Under the scheme, 250 hives would be distributed at costs subsidised to the tune of 50 per cent to farmers spread over the block to help them set up honeybee colonies. “We are aiming to increase the yield of horticulture crops from the block by 50 per cent through apiculture,” Mr. Santhanakrishnan said.
Regarding floriculture, the Department plans to bring at least three hectares under loose flowers like jasmine, and bachelors button before the end of this year.
