THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Olympic Association president M. M. Abdul Rehman has emerged as the consensus candidate for the Kerala State Sports Council (KSSC) vice-president’s post for which the election is to be held at a special general meeting here on Thursday. Talking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, KSSC president T.P. Dasan said the candidature of Abdul Rehman was certain to have a smooth sailing. The election to the five-member Standing Committee have already turned out to be a unanimous affair with S. Rajiv (aquatics), Paul Aluvathingal (athletics), K.S. Babu (Wayanad), G. Bipin (Pathanamthitta) and V.S. Sunil Kumar, MLA being elected unopposed. The formal announcement will be made only at Thursday’s meeting. The elections to the post of vice-president and Standing Committee members are being held for the first time since the State Assembly adopted the Kerala Sports Act in 2000. In the meanwhile, the Government, however, has brought in certain amendments to the Act through an Ordinance. This includes the provision of the Government having the power to nominate the president of the KSSC from among the members of the Council. Earlier, the same provision gave the Government power only to make such a nomination from among the elected members of the Council. The membership of the Council includes both elected and nominated members. — Special Correspondent
