10 cyclone shelters planned in Pudukottai

PUDUKOTTAI: Ten cyclone relief shelters will be constructed in two coastal taluks of Pudukottai district under the World Bank-aided Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Package (ETRP). The district administration has identified villages for the shelters to be constructed on an extent of 50 cents each.
While seven shelters will be located in Manamelkudi taluk, the other three will come up in Avudaiyarkovil taluk.
The district accounts for a coastal area length of about 38 km. The shelters will be constructed in Kumarappanvayal, Paalakudi, Anthoniyarpuram, Mumbaalai, Avudaiyarpattinam, Pillaiyarthidal and Manamelkudi (all in Manamelkudi taluk) and R. Pudupattinam, Arasanagaripattinam and Muthukuda (in Avudaiyarkovil taluk), the Collector, A. Suganthi, told The Hindu here.
She also said that as many as 1,063 houses would be constructed under the ETRP to benefit the residents whose houses were located at a distance between 200 mts and 1,000 mts from the shore. While 903 houses would be constructed in Manamelkudi taluk the rest 160 houses would come up in Avudayarkovil taluk.
She also said that a meeting was held for expeditious disbursement of educational assistance.
