KOZHIKODE: The Association of the School of Nano Science and Technology (SNST) at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C), conducted a one-day workshop on recent trends in nanotechnology. Some of the top Indian-born scientists working in the field attended the workshop.

P.M. Ajayan, Professor of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, Rice University, Texas, U.S.A; George John, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, City College of New York; and Shaijumon M., Researcher, Universite Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France, spoke to around 300 students and the faculty at the NIT-C on the direction in which nanotechnology is headed for.

Inaugurating the workshop, K. Prabhakaran Nair, Director-in-charge of NIT-C, said that the School of Nano Science and Technology would soon develop into a leading research centre.

Divergent fields

“Our eight faculty members at the school are from such divergent fields as mechanical engineering, electronics, chemistry, etc., and have worked at some of the top research labs in the world,” Prof. Prabhakaran said.

“The inter-disciplinary nature of the work done at the SNST is not seen in other courses,” he added.

Prof. C. V. Sobhan who heads the SNST said that the School which started functioning this year is involved in five major projects and has drawn Rs.2.5 crore in funds. He said that several top scientists working in nanotechnology would visit the SNST over the academic year and talk to students and monitor the progress of projects.

Prof. Ajayan dealt with ‘Challenges and Future of Nanoscale Engineering’ in the first session, Prof. John spoke on ‘A green approach to self assembled soft nano materials’ and in the last session Dr. Shaijumon lectured the students on ‘Nanotechnology for Energy Applications.’
