AIFF asks for grant from BCCI

Special Correspondent

Mumbai: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) a grant of Rs. 25 crore for the development of football. The Finance Committee deliberated on the matter on Wednesday at the Cricket Centre and it is possible the Working Committee may respond positively to the AIFF request at its meeting here on Thursday.

“The AIFF has written to the BCCI for a grant of Rs. 25 crore. We have discussed this and it’s now upto the Working Committee to take a call,” said Rajiv Shukla, Chairman of the Finance Committee, BCCI.

Three years ago the BCCI committed to support five Olympic disciplines through the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) and the Ministry of Sports (MOS) and the Income and Expenditure account of 2007-08 shows a contribution of Rs. 15 crore towards the NSDF. The Board made an additional contribution of Rs. 35 crore in the next fiscal to fulfil its commitment.

The former BCCI President Sharad Pawar in his report (2007-08) had pointed out that a landmark decision has been taken to set up a corpus of Rs. 80 crore with the MOS to help Indian sportspersons win medals at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next year. In the event of a favourable decision from the Working Committee to support football, the BCCI may also take a firm call on whether to support five other disciplines.

In addition, the BCCI this year supported four sportspersons — Anand Pawar (badminton), Karan Rastogi (tennis), Aditya Jagtap (squash) and J. Agnishwar (swimming) — nearly to the tune of Rs. 50 lakh, a high sum of Rs. 21 lakh being paid to Rastogi.

The Working Committee will ratify reports from various committees and also recommend TV subsidy for fiscal April 2008 to March 2009.
