Aarti Dhar

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Thursday approved the continuation of the Centrally sponsored scheme for an alternative system of medicine in Ayush hospitals and dispensaries with certain modifications for supporting the mainstreaming of the same under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) at an expenditure of Rs. 650 crore.

The objectives of the scheme, introduced in the 10th Plan, is to encourage opening of general and specialised ayurveda, yoga, unani, siddha and homoeopathy Ayush treatment centres in allopathy hospitals, with a view to integrating alternative health services with the mainstream health system in the country. It also aims to provide assistance to the State government for procurement and supply of essential drugs to Ayush hospitals and dispensaries and facilitate revitalisation of traditional systems of medicine at all levels.

The scheme envisages provision of preventive, promotive and curative health care covering Ayush all over the country. Grants-in-aid will be provided to the State and Union Territories for the establishment of System Specific Outdoor Therapy Centres in primary health centres and Ayush specialised therapy centres with hospitalisation facilities in community health centres.

Ayush wings will be set up in district hospitals, with assured supply of essential drugs. The grants will also cover schemes for upgradation of Ayush hospitals and dispensaries.

Specialised Ayush facilities will also be set up in government tertiary care hospitals with public-private partnership. The government will provide managerial assistance at the Central and State level.
