NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has tied up with the Union Textiles Ministry to promote handicraft items from across the country. For this purpose, the DMRC will set up 160 kiosks for display and sale of handicrafts at metro stations. “The high quality kiosks will be fabricated by Delhi Metro and will be installed at the existing and upcoming metro stations in a phased manner beginning October this year,” said a DMRC spokesperson. High-visibility spotsHe said the Ministry had expressed interest in opening kiosks at metro stations to promote handicraft and handloom products as the shops will be located in high-visibility spots where the footfalls are high and the entire range of handicraft products can be displayed throughout the metro network. “The kiosks will also target foreign buyers who are expected in large numbers during the Commonwealth Gam- es,” said the spokesperson. To firm up the partnership, Union Textiles Secretary Rita Menon met DMRC Managing Director E. Sreedharan on Thursday and presented a cheque for Rs.5 crore as the first instalment for setting up the kiosks. DMRC will provide the space required and maintain the kiosks.
