Aavin installs bulk milk coolers

ERODE: To further improve milk quality, Erode milk union, Aavin, has installed milk cooling units at 12 places in Erode district and Kangayam and Dharapuram taluks of Tirupur district. With the units, called bulk milk coolers (BMCs), Aavin aims at cutting short the time between milking and cooling and thereby preserving milk quality.

“Aavin has installed the BMCs close to milk procurement centres and primary milk cooperative societies to reduce travel time, so that bacterial multiplication is curtailed,” says Aavin General Manager R. Subhash Chandra Bose. Soon after milking, bacteria multiply and higher bacterial content means poorer milk quality.

Prior to the installation of the BMCs, it took Aavin about six hours to transport milk from 723 primary milk cooperative societies to the chilling units in Dharapuram, Sathyamangam and Chittode.

“After setting up BMCs, Aavin has brought down the time from six to two hours and curtailed four hours bacteria growth,” says Assistant General Manager S. Mani.

The milk union has set up 12 BMCs, 10 with 5,000 litres capacity and two with 2,000 litres capacity each. The BMCs in Kazhalipalayam and Mangalapatty, near Muthur, Sadayappa Nagar, near Vellakoil, Pudupai and Ponnivadi, near Moolanur, Anaipalayam, Kolathupalayam, and Peramiyam, near Dharapuram, are 5,000 litres each. Aavin has installed the units, each worth Rs. 20 lakh, with Centre’s assistance under the Strengthening of Infrastructure and Quality scheme with 75 per cent grant.
