Presenting an opportunity to plan growth

Special Correspondent

Connect 2009 on September 11 and 12

CHENNAI: While there is certainly a “meltdown” in the IT industry due to global factors, in the Indian IT sector, the “momentum continues,” according to S.Mahalingam, Chief Financial Officer, Tata Consultancy Services.

The signs of recovery were already apparent and Connect 2009, the ICT conference being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in the city on September 11 and September 12, will be an opportunity to plan the path towards 4X growth in the next five years, he said.

The ninth edition of the conference will involve industry experts and government policy makers and will try to address the challenge of sustaining the investment climate in the long run. Gopal Srinivasan, past chairman, CII-Tamil Nadu, said that the conference would look at both IT and communication technologies. Mr.Srinivasan said that the annual entrepreneurship awards being given for lifetime achievement and for investment in Tamil Nadu and by Tamil Nadu investors would encourage a new generation of entrepreneurs.

The nominations were open for the next week and he said that people were free to nominate outstanding entrepreneurs.

P.W.C.Davidar, State IT secretary, said that the government was keen on helping the IT industry and said that it would use the conference to highlight the strengths of the State.

Mr.Mahalingam also announced that an “Unconference” would be organised on September 10 where the views of over 500 participants, mostly students and youths, would be heard. He said that apart from industry executives, political leaders including Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin, Union Communications Minister A.Raja, and State IT Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna were expected to participate.
