Dibrugarh University punishes 10 students for ragging

Guwahati: The Dibrugarh University on Friday punished 10 students, including two girls, for allegedly ragging their juniors.

The punishment ranged from expulsion to rustication for two semesters, to fines to the tune of Rs. 20,000, besides withholding scholarship and fellowship and debarring participation in sports and cultural competitions.

Five of the students are boarders of the University’s Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Hostel, while the rest are day scholars.

All five boarders have been expelled from the hostel. One of them, a student of the Department of Commerce, has been expelled from the University as well and has been debarred from getting admission in any other institution.

Fines imposed

Another expelled boarder , a student of the Department of History has been rusticated for two semesters, and a fine of Rs. 10,000 has been imposed on him.

Of the remaining three expelled boarders, , a student of the Department of Assamese, and one from the Centre for Computer Studies have been fined Rs. 15,000 while a student of the Department of Sociology has been fined Rs. 10000.

Of the five day scholars of the Department of Political Science, two were imposed with a fine of Rs 20,000 each, while another was debarred from participating in any national, international and local level competition.

Scholarship withheld

The University authorities also ordered withholding and withdrawing the scholarship and fellowship of the two accused girls .

University Vice Chancellor K.K. Deka announced the punishments on the basis of enquiries instituted by the university authorities.
