CIL, SAIL chief get SCOPE award

Transformation of CIL had been from a born-sick mining infant to a coal-mining giant now


KOLKATA: Coal India Ltd. (CIL) has been given the SCOPE award for excellence and outstanding contribution to the public sector management in the institutional category in 2007-08. At the same award function, Chairman of Steel Authority of India Ltd S. K. Roongta was given the award for excellence in the individual category.

While former chief justice of India P. N. Bhagwati was the Chairman of the jury, the other members included Abid Hussain former Indian ambassador to the U.S., Arjun Sengupta, Rajya Sabha MP, Nitish Sengupta, Chairman, Bureau for Revival of Public Sector Enterprises, and Moosa Raza, former union secretary.

The Standing Committee of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) Director General U. D. Choubey said that the selection of this prestigious award had been based on stringent criteria devised and evaluated by the International Management Institute and a distinguished jury.

In his presentation before the jury in New Delhi on Wednesday, CIL Chairman Partha S. Bhattacharyya said the transformation of CIL had been from a born-sick mining infant to a coal-mining giant now. CIL was adjudged the winner in its category on Thursday after pipping two other PSEs, it was learnt.

Heavy Engineering Corporation bagged a special institutional award in the turnaround category. Electronics Corporation of India and WAPCOS bagged gold trophies in the medium and smaller PSE categories, respectively. National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation was awarded commendation certificate, a SAIL release said.
