KOLKATA: Puneet Jaiswal of Railways held top seeded IM Deep Sengupta to draw in the second round of the 47th National B chess championship here at the Town Hall on Friday.

The top seeded Deep was dragged into a long drawn battle by his less-fancied opponent. The endgame had Deep with rook, bishop and two pawns against Puneet’s two rooks. Deep tried hard to get the full point but Puneet defended with determination and forced a draw after 56 moves.

Anurag upsets Murali

In another upset in the top boards, Anurag Mhamal of Goa shocked B.T. Murali Krishna of Railways.

Other fancied names won their games with relative ease. Tamil Nadu duo of Adhiban and S.P. Sethuraman and Maharashtra’s Vidit Gujrathi were impressive, finishing off their games early.

The under-16 World youth champion Adhiban completed his second win comfortably against another youngster G.V. Sai Krishna of Andhra Pradesh in 26 moves.

Playing with white, Adhiban won the better exchange of rook for Bishop along with two pawns in the middle game. His opponent resigned a few moves later.

Sethuraman, who took the runner-up spot behind Adhiban in the world event last year, was equally impressive against C.R. Krishna.

He sacrificed his rook for knight on the eighth move in the little-played Leningrad variation of the Dutch defence to break open Krishna’s king side. Sethuraman then effectively used his minor pieces to ensure the full point.

Gujrathi, the under-14 world champion, had little problems in the getting through the Nimzo-Indian defence adopted his by opponent K.V. Santharam of Indian Bank and won in 28 moves.
