Malaysian High Commission clarifies

CHENNAI: In response to a report which appeared on August 9 under the headline, “Looking for a ‘golden anniversary’”, Faizal Shani, Second Secretary (Political), High Commission of Malaysia, New Delhi, writes: “The report is incorrect. The organisers of this sports event have given all the participating teams an option of three hotels to choose from, one of which was this service apartment. Besides the Malaysians, three teams from other countries also chose to stay in this service apartment.

“Further, it is true that Lee Chong Wei, the Malaysian player, was down with food poisoning in April. This time, the team brought two cooks with them. No doubt Indian food is very delicious and healthy, but the team didn’t want to miss Malaysian food either.”

The report, by our Principal Correspondent from Hyderabad in the lead up to the BWF World badminton championship, had said: “The Malaysians seem to be still sulking after the first round loss their World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei suffered in the India Open Grand Prix Championship this April.

“After arrival, they refused to stay in a hotel and preferred to book a service apartment. And they are now armed with their cook who can dish out they favourite and ‘healthy’ menu. Reason? Lee Chong Wei attributed his humiliating loss to food poisoning.”
