Uthappa gets highest bid

Principal Correspondent

Uthappa was snapped up by Bangalore Brigaders for Rs. 3.25 lakh

Bangalore: Robin Uthappa was the marquee cricketer for the Karnataka Premier League as he was snapped up by Bangalore Brigaders (urban) for Rs. 3.25 lakh in the player-auction at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Friday.

The amount might be modest in comparison to the crores bandied around in the Indian Premier League but for a tournament that is smaller in scale and restricted to players from Karnataka, the opener walked away with a lion’s share of the combined budgetary cap of Rs. 7 lakh ear-marked for each zonal team to buy a group of six players from the top-tier of 48.

Surprise

Surprisingly all-rounder Stuart Binny, who has just returned from the Indian Cricket League after the Board of Control for Cricket in India granted amnesty, was the second-most expensive player, coming in at a price of Rs. 3.20 lakh for Gulbarga’s Bijapur Bulls.

All-rounder B. Akhil was next in line with a Rs. 3 lakh bid coming from Bangalore Provident, the team representing Bangalore Rural.

Lower price

Surprisingly the experienced Sunil Joshi and the up-coming star Manish Pandey went at a lower price — Rs. 2.05 and Rs. 2.55 lakhs respectively — as the bidding progressed and the budgets shrunk.

The eight zonal teams now have an additional budget of Rs. 4 lakh to select another eight players or more to finalise their squads ahead of the KPL here from September 9 to 23.
