KOCHI: An analysis of the share of India’s exports to and imports from ASEAN in India’s global exports and imports between 1991 and 2004 indicate that exports did not show adequate growth post 1997, while imports continued to grow, barring 2001. Citing a study conducted by CII, Justin Paul, author of ‘Export Import Management’ and Associate Professor of Nagoya University of Commerce & Business Administration, has said that an export mission should be established to improve the exports. Talking to The Hindu, he said exports had played a key role in the progress of countries such as China and Japan. India requires initiatives at the panchayat level to counter the challenges posed by ASEAN free trade agreement. Export cells to promote farm products should be set up extensively. He said the ASEAN pact should aim at a free temporary entry facility for Indians to the countries in the region. The Japanese do not require visas for entry into over 50 countries, Mr.Paul, a former faculty of Indian Institute of Management, said. Post 1991, India’s progressive integration with the global economy and its ‘Look east’ policy have helped improve both its exports to and imports from ASEAN till 1996.
