Rs. 5.76 crore for primary schools

M. Balaganessin

TIRUCHI: A sum of Rs.5.76 crore has been sanctioned under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) for providing additional infrastructure to upper primary schools in Tiruchi district.

A major share of Rs.2 crore has been sanctioned for the supply of desks and benches . Supply of benches and desks will be an important facility for the pupils and, attaching priority to it, the Education Department has already placed orders with the TANSI. Another Rs.1.17 crore will be utilised for construction of three class-room block, toilet block and kitchen shed in 12 schools. These schools were recently upgraded into upper primary institutions, Chief Educational Officer, SSA, R. Vijayakumari, told The Hindu here on Thursday. Each upper primary school would get Rs.9.75 lakh.

Ms. Vijayakumari said that a sum of Rs.47 lakh had been sanctioned for construction of toilets in 97 schools. While common toilets would be constructed in 24 schools, girl-friendly toilets would be constructed at 70 schools.

With a view to ensuring safety, Rs.15 lakh would be spent for the construction of compound walls at 20 schools. “The cumulative length of the wall at each school will be 50 metres,” she added. Priority was attached to ensuring supply of drinking water for which Rs. 1.75 lakh had been sanctioned for seven schools. To facilitate minor repairs and proper upkeep of institutions, a sum of Rs. 1.96 crore had already been released to primary and upper primary schools in the district. “The funds would be utilised for meeting expenses such as repair of black-boards and strengthening of floors,” she said.
